Abstract
With only six direct references and no stage lines and actions in the whole play, the Indian boy in A Midsummer Night's Dream is an easily ignored source of contention.Compared with ma-instream research topics in this play, such as comedic elements, dreams, narrative structure, language and carnivalization, the Indian boy has not drawn due attention in the early research of A Midsummer Night's Dream. However,it is no accident that Shakespeare created such a charac-ter of an Indian boy.During the social transition period at the end of the 16th century and the be-ginning of the 17th century, the Indian boy was an important witness of Britain's move towards capitalism, colonialism and the modern patriarchal family structure.
