摘要
中华教育文化基金会作为美国庚子退款的产物,对民国的文化教育事业产生了重要影响.本文研究发现,中基会的下设机构编译委员会在胡适的主持下,翻译成果丰硕,翻译理念前沿、管理模式成熟,具体表现在:1)翻译选材由自然科学转向人文科学,大量翻译出版文史哲方面的名著;2)统一翻译标准,主张白话译文,译文力求自然;3)独立翻译与合作翻译相结合,通过翻译审校把控翻译质量;4)注重译者培养,通过增加译酬提高译者地位.虽然中基会编译委员会只存在了 13 年,但赞助了大批的翻译项目,推动了民国翻译活动的转型,促进了新中国的文化教育事业发展.
Abstract
China Foundation for the Promotion of Education and Culture(CFPEC),as the product of the Remission of Boxer Indemnity by the United States,has had an important impact on the cul-tural and educational enterprises in the Republic of China.This paper finds that the Committee on Editing and Translation of CFPEC chaired by Hu Shi translated many important western books,and presented cutting-edge translation principles and mature operation,as shown in the following aspects:1)the focus of translation shifted from sciences to humanities,and many western masterpieces on literature,history and philosophy were translated and published;2)translation standards were unified and natural translation in the vernacular was advocated;3)independent translation and cooperative translation were both adopted;emphasis was placed on translation review and thus translation quality was strictly controlled;4)attention was also paid to train translators and to enhance translators'status by offering them generous remuneration.Al-though the Committee only existed for 13 years,it sponsored a large number of translation pro-jects,promoted the transformation of translation activities in the Republic of China,and devel-oped the cultural and educational undertakings in the People's Republic of China.
