Objective:To quantitatively analyze the changes in the macular and peripapillary vessel density(VD)in patients with thyroid associated ophthalmopathy(TAO)and hyperthyroidism by optical coherence tomo-graphy angiography(OCTA),and to explore non-invasive monitoring indicators that can early reflect the occurrence and development of TAO.Method:Using a cross-sectional clinical study,a total of 24 patients with active TAO(TAO group),24 patients of hyperthyroidism without ocular symptoms(hyperthyroidism group)and 24 normal healthy persons(control group)from February 2023 to June 2023 were included. The subjects in three groups un-derwent OCTA examination with the scanning modes of macular HD6mm× 6mm and optic disc HD4.5mm X 4.5mm.And the superficial and deep capillary plexus VD,radial peripapillary capillaries VD(ppVD),retinal nerve fibre layer(RNFL)thickness and the area of the foveal avascular zone(FAZ)were measured. The above indexes were compared among the three groups. Results:Compared with the control group, superficial capillary plexus VD in hyperthyroidism group and TAO group were significantly decreased(P<0.05 or P<0.01).Compared with the hyperthyroidism group, superficial capillary plexus VD in regions of whole,N2 and I2 of TAO group were signifi-cantly decreased(P<0.05 or P<0.01).The deep capillary plexus VD in foveal region of hyperthyroidism and TAO group were significantly lower than that of control group(P<0.05 and P<0.01,respectively).The differ-ences in ppVD and RNFL thickness in most regions among the three groups were not statistically significant(P>0.05).The FAZ area of hyperthyroidism group and TAO group was significantly larger than that of control group(P<0.05 and P<0.01,respectively).Conclusion:Superficial capillary plexus VD has decreased and FAZ area has enlarged in eyes of patients with hyperthyroidism before clinically detectable TAO and the related changes are more severe in patients with TAO.OCTA can help to monitor the changes of related indicators in the early stage.
