Taking a qualitative case study approach,this study analyzes multiple data from interviews,classroom observations,student writings and textbooks,and explores the textbook use of the students in English narrative writing from the perspective of transformative agency.The findings show that the students encounter difficulties in genre knowledge,writing skills,and language expression in English narrative writing.To tackle these issues,they exercise transformative agency by retrieving and using a variety of resources centering around the textbook,and engaging themselves in transformative actions such as imitation and creative integration,which enhances their English narrative writing abilities in terms of genre knowledge,writing skills,and language expression.The study highlights the interactive and dynamic nature of textbook use,and provides valuable insights into textbook research and writing pedagogy.
