This study conducts a multifactorial analysis of the first language, source domain, word class and move variables of metaphor use in international journal article introductions in the realm of applied linguistics. The results show that in general all two-way and three-way interactions of multidimensional metaphor features are statistically significant. The source domains used by both English native and Chinese scholars have significant interactions with word classes and moves.Nonetheless, they differ significantly on specific levels. The two groups of scholars differ significantly in the use of LOCATION,PHYSICAL OBJECT and MOVEMENT metaphors when metaphor-related words are employed as verbs and adjectives.English native scholars use more MOVEMENT and PHYSICAL OBJECT metaphors in Move 1(establishing a territory)and Move 3(occupying the niche)respectively, while Chinese scholars use more SPEECH metaphors in Move 2(establishing a niche). The study comprehensively reveals the multidimensional features of metaphor use and their interactions in international journal article introductions of applied linguistics, offering implications for EAP writing pedagogy and international academic publication.
