The research and practice of ESL textbook evaluation in foreign countries made an early start,which has important implications for the evaluation practice of foreign language textbooks in China.This paper summarizes the development course and characteristics of ESL textbook evaluation checklists abroad in the past 50 years.The development of ESL textbook evaluation checklists has gone through three stages,namely the initial stage,the growing stage,and the prosperous stage.In this process,the theoretical foundation has been moving towards precision,the evaluation elements have been developing towards appropriateness,and the evaluation methods have been evolving towards dynamism.In order to improve the quality of Chinese foreign language textbook evaluation and compilation,the paper proposes that a tree-form theoretical system with a prominent backbone and clear collateral branches should be established,a textbook evaluation element system with appropriate indicators and hierarchical segmentation should be constructed,and an evaluation feedback and optimization chain with dynamic and static aspects empowered by technology should be built.
