This paper examines the presuppositionality effect on the production of English articles in eight referential types of nominals among 120 Chinese learners with different language proficiency, and discusses the categorical attribution of presuppositionality. The results show that presuppositionality has no significant effect on the production of English articles in the indefinite nonspecific nominals and definite specific nominals;in the indefinite specific type, presuppositionality significantly affects the output of English articles, but the significance level appears only in elementary learners.Presuppositionality functions as a pragmatic factor rather than a Universal Grammar parameter in Chinese learners'acquisition of English articles. Therefore,Chinese learners'referential expression system of English articles is a binary system consisting of definiteness and specificity.
