Under the tenets of the practice methodology for complete translation, this study adopts questionnaires and statistical analysis to probe into the use of complete translation methods by 2071 undergraduate English majors in Chinese universities and colleges. The results reveal as follows:(1)the subjects'ability to use the seven complete translation methods is generally at a medium level(mean value 3.01)in the descending order of addition>conversion>omission>correspondence>transposition>combination>division, which helps to modify some previous hypotheses;(2)the subjects usually use 30 skills in relation to words, phrases and clauses, and high-frequency skills include addition of morphemes and words, tangible transposition and conversion between word classes, whereas intangible transposition, separation and combination of phrases, and correspondence in composite sentences are low-frequency skills;(3)significantly positive correlations are found between the six methods except correspondence, which verifies and modifies the theoretical assumptions regarding the single and multiple use of complete translation methods. The study sheds some light on future research on the correlation between translation learners'use of complete translation practice methods and their translation competence, and offers some enlightenment for translation teaching and translator training.
