China's language strategy:Challenges and transformations in foreign language education in the New Era
This study explores the critical role of language strategy within the broader national strategies of major powers,emphasizing its significance in augmenting comprehensive national competitiveness.Addressing the rapid changes in global dynamics,societal shifts,and technological advancements,this paper,integrating an economic analytical framework,delves into the challenges and transformations facing foreign language education in China and proposes five major recommendations:1)Transitioning foreign language education from exam-oriented to application-oriented learning,responding to evolving demand-side needs;2)Shifting from a one-size-fits-all instruction model to a more personalized and flexible education paradigm,addressing supply-side requirements;3)Broadening the scope of foreign language education beyond mere language education to encompass comprehensive language services,meeting market demands;4)Utilizing language education as a strategic instrument for fostering national soft power;5)Encouraging foreign language institutions to refine their strategic mission,with a focus on cultivating interdisciplinary talents with patriotism,international perspective and professionalism.Additionally,this article highlights Beijing Foreign Studies University's visionary development strategy leading up to 2050.This strategy closely aligns with China's modernization goals,with global language,culture,and governance as its three strategic pillars,striving to build a world-class institution that champions the exchange of global civilization.
