The processing of middle constructions at the syntax-semantics interface by Chinese EFL learners
This study used a self-paced reading task to investigate Chinese EFL learners'processing of middle constructions at the syntax-semantics interface. The results showed significant differences in the processing of prototypical and non-prototypical middles,as the reaction times for prototypical middles in the subject regions were significantly shorter than those for non-prototypical middles, and the acceptability ratings for prototypical middles were significantly higher than those for non-prototypical middles. It was found that Chinese EFL learners failed to acquire a syntax-semantics interface for English middle constructions. These findings are explained by the Interface Heterogeneity Hypothesis as a complement to the Interface Hypothesis.
