A longitudinal study on the effects of learners'individual difference factors on L2 writing performance
Drawing on the control-value theory, the present study investigated the predictive effects of individual difference factors on high school students'second-language writing performance through questionnaires, tests, and interviews. The results of the path analysis showed that 1)L2 writing performance was directly predicted by anxiety and motivation, while the direct effects of grit, enjoyment, and working memory on L2 writing performance were not significant;and 2)grit can indirectly predict L2 writing performance via three mediating paths.Interview data revealed that motivation and anxiety influenced L2 writing performance due to the stability and independence of anxiety as well as the significance and stability of motivation, and that control appraisals, value appraisals, and self-efficacy significantly affected the mediating paths. These results provide empirical evidence for the mediating path of"personality trait factors → emotional factors →motivational factors → academic performance"proposed by the control-value theory.
