Cognitive load and interpretation quality of technology-assisted simultaneous interpreting
This study used the eye-tracking method to investigate the cognitive load and interpretation quality of simultaneous Chinese-English interpretation with and without technological assistance. We also explored how the effect of interpretation mode on cognitive load and interpretation quality varied between novice and professional interpreters. The results showed that simultaneous interpretation assisted by automatic speech recognition and machine translation reduced the cognitive load on novice interpreters and improved their interpretation accuracy. However, the advantages of technology-assisted simultaneous interpretation are less evident among professional interpreters. We discussed the findings from the perspectives of working memory pressure and language transfer,as well as the ceiling effect.
