A study of English irrealis super construction from the perspective of Cognitive Linguistics
Based on Construction Grammar,this paper delves into the super construction which uniformly governs the English irrealis category.It is revealed that the super construction underlying the English irrealis category manifests itself in"if irregular event A,then irregular event B,"the syntactic form of which manifests as the abnormal change of the head,and is equipped with a continuum from negation to irrealis.Nevertheless,as an event schema,the super construction governing the English irrealis category portrays a dynamic process projected from Condition A to Result B.This paper concludes that the new construct of super construction possesses explanatory power and can be used to elucidate the relationship between several grammatical constructions.
