The evolution and innovation of Chinese linguistic theories under the influence of Generative Grammar
Contemporary studies of Chinese language have evolved tremendously and developed towards diversification over the past 100 years under the influence of Latin Grammar,Structuralism,Generative Grammar and other theories.During the evolution of Chinese linguistic theories,Generative Grammar has always had a powerful impact. This paper begins with a summary of the advances made in the theoretical studies in Generative Grammar and highlights the reasons why Generative Grammar has been influential. It then discusses the latest developments in Generative Grammar and its application and innovation in the study of the Chinese language, especially that of the so-called evaluative adverbs and sentence-final particles unique to Chinese and some Asian languages, adopting Cartography Theory to find a solution at the interface of syntax and other subfields. When faced with new linguistic facts, researchers should abandon the ideas of"cutting off the feet to fit the shoes"(a total Westernization)and"abandoning the shoes because of the feet"(a complete Chineseization),and seek how to"expand the shoes to suit the feet"and continue to promote the innovation and development of linguistic theories.
