The role of phonological processing speed in second language listening development
Processing speed is one of the fundamental cognitive abilities. It refers to how quickly one comprehends and responds to the incoming auditory flow in the context of listening comprehension.Few studies have investigated the role of processing speed in second language(L2)listening development. The present study explored the predictive roles of phonological processing speed(L1 and L2)and general processing speed in L2 listening development using a pre-post design. Our results show that phonological processing speed, but not general processing speed, significantly predicted L2 listening improvement.Furthermore, compared to L2 phonological processing speed,L1 phonological processing speed more strongly predicted L2 listening improvement. Our findings suggest that phonological processing speed plays an important role in the L2 listening development among non-proficient L2 learners.
