Roads to multiple quantification—An investigation of the multiply quantified structure in English and Chinese from the perspective of scope(in)dependency
This paper proposes a fine-grained analysis of the scope interpretation of multiply quantified structures. From the perspective of logical dependency, multiply quantified structures can have two readings—one scope-dependent and the other scope-independent—and the combination of these two may result in different scope interpretations of the multiply quantified structure. This paper reanalyses the possible ways to derive the interpretation of multiply quantified structures in English and Chinese and argues that the scope interpretation of these structures can be adequately accounted for by the analysis proposed in this paper.Furthermore, although different types of multiply quantified structures in different languages may have scope-independent reading, that they all have scope-dependent readings may not necessarily be true. This accounts for scope-independent reading, not scope-dependent reading, being the default reading.
