Correspondence motivation for Chinese and English paired patterns
Correspondence in cognitive grammar refers to the conceptual overlap across coherent windows, which varies across the serial, pairwise, and cumulative modes of access in processing windows.Equipollent correspondence is proposed as one of the basic motivations for Chinese and English paired patterns,in which paired windows involve equal salience, structural analogues,an equivalent number of windows, and form-meaning iconicity. In paired patterns, equipollent correspondence is prototypically instantiated as a discrete pairing mode that can override the serial, pairwise,or cumulative modes of access in prominence. With discrete pairing as a global frame, correspondence shows dynamic variations across paired windows, the core process of which is the equipollence-oriented correspondence-opposition mechanism,in contrast to the layer-oriented correspondence-differential mechanism motivating elliptic coordination.
