University foreign language teachers'profiles and current teaching situation in China:A survey report
To investigate the profiles and current teaching situation of foreign language teachers at Chinese universities, the National Research Centre for Foreign Language Education conducted an online survey of 22,258 teachers across 31 provinces from April to May 2022.The following are the survey results.1)The age and teaching experience profiles of foreign language teachers in Chinese universities are relatively balanced, and the match between their professional backgrounds and appointed positions is high. However, there remain issues such as gender imbalance and insufficient proportions of teachers holding high academic qualifications and senior professional titles.2)Overall,foreign language teachers are highly familiar with foreign language education policy documents, prioritize and value their instructional duties in relation to other aspects of their role such as administrative tasks or research, frequently engage in teaching collaboration, and hold a positive attitude towards teaching innovation. However, teachers face a heavy teaching workload, and teaching collaboration among certain teachers and teaching innovation require further enhancement.Additionally, more than 30%of teachers need greater familiarity with foreign language education policy documents. This study analyses the causes of these survey findings and proposes targeted recommendations.
