The effects of vocabulary knowledge on written translation abilities
Much translation research has focused on the examination of vocabulary from an ontological perspective,but relatively few studies investigate the impact of translators'vocabulary knowledge on their translation abilities.Accordingly,the present study examines the impact of translators'receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge on their written translation abilities and processing mechanisms,selecting first-year MTI postgraduate students as participants.Through translation tests,post-translation oral reports and interviews,the study revealed the following.1)Both receptive and productive lexical knowledge significantly predicted translators'English-Chinese(E-C)and Chinese-English(C-E)written translation abilities though with different prediction levels.2)Among graded vocabulary,receptive vocabulary at the 10,000 level and productive vocabulary at the 3000 level significantly predicted E-C written translation ability;the significant predictors of C-E written translation ability were productive academic vocabulary and receptive and productive vocabulary at the 10,000 and 3000 levels,respectively.3)The direct influencing factor of E-C written translation ability was receptive vocabulary knowledge,with productive vocabulary knowledge acting as a mediating factor;for C-E written translation ability,the mechanisms of action of the two types of vocabulary knowledge were the opposite.
