Abstract
This study compared learner engagement in face-to-face and remote online peer interactions.Twelve freshmen English majors, comprising six pairs, engaged in both face-to-face and remote online peer interactions in one semester. An analysis of the transcriptions from their three face-to-face and three online interactions revealed no significant difference between the two modes of interaction in terms of learners'behavioral, cognitive, and social engagement. The interviews with eight participants showed that in terms of emotional engagement, despite their preference for face-to-face interactions, there was no noticeable difference in peer cooperation between the two interaction modes. The findings suggest that there is limited difference in the effectiveness of peer interaction between remote environment and traditional classroom environment, which to some extent provides empirical support for carrying out remote online interaction.
