The Genesis of Early English-Japanese Pedagogical Dictionaries in Japan and Their Learnerizing Paths
The learnerizing of bilingual dictionaries refers to the compilers'efforts to maximize the usefulness of general bilingual dic-tionaries to satisfy the needs of foreign language learners. At the beginning of the 20th century,English-Japanese pedagogical dic-tionaries emerged in response to the changes in Japanese dictionary users'English language learning needs, especially their pro-ductive needs of expressing themselves in English. The learnerizing paths of these dictionaries include the inclusion of core com-mon words at the macro level, and the learnerizing of the pragmatic-semantic information and contextual information at the micro level. Before the genesis of monolingual English learners'dictionaries, the efforts made by the compilers of early English-Japanese pedagogical dictionaries to learnerize general English-Japanese dictionaries represented beneficial preliminary preparations in terms of lexicographical practices for the birth of monolingual learners'dictionaries and bilingual learners'dictionaries.Reviewing the history of dictionary compilation in this specific period has positive implications for the current research on the compilation of bilingual learners'dictionary in China.
