Studies on American Press-State Relations:The Indexing Hypothesis and the Cascade Model
Scholars studying the American Press-State Relations generally believe that the White House plays a decisive role in framing news reports on foreign affairs and conversely the media also play an important part in setting the political agenda of the state. The Indexing Hypothesis and the Cascade Model introduced and discussed in this paper show that there is a basically symbiotic rela-tion between the American press and the state, supporting each other's positions on most international issues, especially when these issues pose a real or potential threat to the major interests and central values of the United States.
