On Worldview Disparity Between Chinese and English Reflected from Quantity Representation of Nouns
The language structure(whether it is phonological, lexical or grammatical)itself embodies the spiritual and cultural charac-teristics of a language. In terms of quantity representation of English and Chinese nouns,Chinese is classifier language while English is number-marking language. The use of classifiers in Mandarin Chinese reflects a world view of treating thing and event as oneness by the Chinese people,as contrasted with the view of treating them as discrete objects by native speakers of English. In addition to this hypothesis,Chinese grammatical research should integrate nouns, verbs, and adjectives, and consider them in the larger context of the linguistic worldview, which helps to better describe and understand the Chinese language.
