Linguistic Relativity and Cognitive Linguistics:Two Positions on the Language-thinking Correlation
The correlation between language and thinking, language and the world that people are able to grasp is a scientific topic which cognitive linguistics and linguistic relativity are both engaging in.However, the explanations of this correlation from the two theories are largely opposite.Cognitive linguistics holds that thought is formed outside language, and language only expresses al-ready formed thought;linguistic relativity postulates that thought can only be formed in language. In the absence of reliable intui-tive experimental data from neuroscience which could conclusively exam this correlation occurring in the final analysis in human brain, both explanations are not more than hypotheses.Under this premise,by putting them together for a comparative study,we can at least compare the observational adequacy and descriptive adequacy of these two theories.
