Rethinking the Applicability of Natural Semantic Metalanguage Approach
The core of the Natural Semantic Metalanguage approach(NSM-approach)is the explication composed of semantic primes(SPs).In lexical-semantic and grammatical-semantic analyses, the method is more applicable, because it explains the relevant linguistic phenomena through the presence or absence of SPs,and different combinations of them, and the SPs are directly related to the conclusions, which fully reflects the research characteristics of the approach. In linguistic and cultural analyses, the ap-proach is less applicable, because the SPs do not explain the relevant linguistic phenomena, and do not play a substantial role in the process of drawing conclusions, but only rephrase the conclusions obtained by the traditional approaches with the explication composed of SPs.On the one hand, this study reflects on the methodological level of the semantic research methods used by the Natural Semantic Metalanguage school for half a century, which helps to deepen the understanding of the school's theoretical sys-tem;on the other hand,it proposes that"whether or not there is a direct correlation between the application of linguistic approach and the drawing of conclusions"could be used as a criterion for evaluating the"applicability"of linguistic approach.
