The Exploration of the Logical Duality Within Systemic Functional Linguistics
Firstly, this article briefly introduces the distinction between propositional logic and natural logic and points out the richness of natural logic and the abstractness of propositional logic, suggesting that the latter is derived from the former.Secondly, within the Systemic Functional linguistics the logical duality is explored, namely, logical metafunction and logical conjunction as part of textual metafunction.Thirdly, the uniqueness of the logical metafunction is clarified from three perspectives, namely system, structure and the correspondence between semantics and lexico-grammar,through the comparison with conjunction as part of co-hesion.Lastly,the significance of the logical duality is illuminated from two aspects:on the one hand,it is the prerequisite for the exploration of logical grammatical metaphor;on the other,it strengthens our understanding of the functionally oriented nature of meaning in Systemic Functional linguistics.
