A Study on the Distribution and Generative Mechanism of Mandarin Aspect Markers under Coalescence Theory
This paper adopts the hypothesis of inner aspect and time anchoring theory to comprehensively revise and generalize the dis-tribution of common aspect markers in Chinese. We propose and demonstrate the existence of six aspectual heads in Chinese(Asp10-Asp60)(such as"zai, you, zhe, guo, wan, guang",etc.)and their relative positions in TP and vP layers, including two pre-verbal aspects and four post-verbal aspects, and reinterpret the distribution of verbal and aspectual markers and the me-chanism of movement and adjunction in conjunction with the coalescence theory, which differs from the traditional head move-ment.In addition, this article also re-examines the relationship between the syntactic ordering and dominant and recessive identi-ties of pre-verbal aspects,post-verbal aspects, inner aspect markers and outer aspect markers, based on the Dominance Condition of the coalescence theory. It also explains various aspect-related syntactic phenomena, for example, some aspect markers can but others cannot coexist. At the same time, coalescence theory can provide a unified explanation of the phenomena related to verbs,pre-verbal aspects and post-verbal aspects, thus avoiding the drawbacks of having to employ both the"verb raising theory"and"affix lowering theory".
