On the Rebuilding of a Utopian Idealist's Image in the English Translation of Renmian Taohua
Drawing on an imagological perspective, this study conducts a comparative analysis of the characteristics concerning the image of Lu Xiumi,a utopian idealist,in the source text and the English target text of Renmian Taohua.Besides, the study fur-ther explores how Morse's process of rebuilding Xiumi's image in the English-speaking world was influenced by the socio-cultural background of the target language and the translator's own factors. The textual analysis uncovers that being basically faithful to the characteristics of Xiumi's image,Morse highlighted the main features at each stage of her life through a proper rewriting of the source text, which included:her shyness and curiosity when she was a young girl;her aloofness, indifference, and confusion when she became a utopian idealist;her inner peace and tranquillity after the failure of the revolution.Morse's rebuilding of Xiumi's image in the English-speaking world was mainly influenced by two factors:dystopian literature gained immense popularity among the target readership with a sound market base in recent years;Morse held the translation idea of"co-creation"and had a profound understanding of Chinese traditional culture. The study reveals that when rebuilding a hetero-image in the target lan-guage culture through literary translation, the translator is entitled to rewrite the source text and appropriately highlight the cha-racteristics of the hetero-image to improve the target reader's comprehension of it.In addition, the translator's process of rebuil-ding a hetero-image is influenced by factors including the target reader's horizon of expectation and the translator's own view on translation.
