An Empirical Study on the Influence of Root Frequency and Semantic Transparency on the Processing of English Suffixed-derived Words
This study investigated the influence of root frequency,semantic transparency,and their interactive effect on the processing of English suffixed-derived words.The results showed that:(1)the main effect of root frequency on reaction time was signifi-cant,and the derived words with high root frequency were processed faster than ones with low root frequency;(2)the main effect of transparency on reaction time was significant,and the semantically transparent derived words were processed faster than seman-tically opaque ones;(3)the interactive effect of the two was significant on accuracy rates.Specifically,semantic transparency exerted a greater influence on derived words with low root frequency,while root frequency had a more pronounced impact on se-mantically opaque derived words.Finally,we presented a decomposition processing model of English L2 suffixed-derived words.The model includes two stages:morpheme decomposition and morpheme integration.Both the root frequency and semantic trans-parency influence the time course of processing,and interactively influence the processing quality.
