Editors'feedback of translators'punctuation errors:a descriptive editor's feedback of the translators'misuse of punctuation based on editors'proofreading manuscripts
Punctuation is a basic element of an independent text.Different from the content proofreading of the translation vision, the punctuation in the target text is proofread according to the target language norms instead of the standard of equivalence.Based on the proofreading manuscripts of three translated books, this paper systematically annotates, calculates, and analyzes editors'rectification of punctuation in targeted text.It is found that comma and period are rectified the most frequently with more correction than addition and reduction, indicating the translators'more misuse of punctuation than overuse or omission of it.In punctuation correction, comma is usually changed into dunhao, period, and em dash while period into comma. Moreover, bracket, double quotation mark, and en dash are also frequently rectified.Bracket rectification is usually represented by the change of square bracket into parentheses.Double quotation marks tend to be added. And en dash rectification is featured by the interchange between short en dash and long en dash. These findings above reveal that the translators tend to overuse punctuation with typical Chinese syntax feature, replicate source text's punctuation influenced by its English influence or add some abnormal punctuation that the source text is not required.
