Pilot low-carbon cities and high-quality economic development in the Yangtze River Economic Belt:Impact mechanisms and empirical testing
Green development is a defining feature of China's high-quality economic,and as an important measure of China's ecological civilization construction,low-carbon city pilot help promote high-quality economic development.Drawing upon panel data spanning 2004 to 2020,encompassing 108 cities within the Yangtze River Economic Belt,this article employs a sophisticated multi-time point difference-in-differences model to empirically explore the impact of low-carbon city pilot on high-quality economic development.The key findings underscore:(1)Low-carbon city pilot is conducive to improving the high-quality economic development level of the Yangtze River Economic Belt,and the policy effect has a lag.This conclusion is still valid after a series of robustness tests;(2)A nuanced analysis reveals heterogeneous impacts.Geographically,the low-carbon city pilot initiative exerts a more pronounced effect on promoting high-quality economic development in the upstream regions of the Yangtze River.Additionally,cities with larger populations tend to experience a more significant policy impact;(3)Mechanistic insights reveal that attracting foreign direct investment(FDI)constitutes a pivotal channel through which low-carbon city pilots facilitate high-quality economic growth in the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
