As an important part of ESP teaching,semi-technical words have caused a series of problems in ESP teaching due to their large semantic variation. The reasons for this variation can be better understood through the diachronic study on the characteristics of semi-technical words. Therefore, with the aid of corpora, this paper discusses the diachronic characteristics of semi-technical words in oil and gas storage and transportation English by means of qualitative and quantitative methods, and their implications for discipline-based instruction of ESP teaching. It is found that the distribution of semi-technical words in English for oil and gas storage and transportation tends to be stable, but the coverage of the words expands diachronically.Fur-thermore,the semi-technical words contain more concept meanings and a larger collocational scope with the passage of time.It is significant in the discipline-based instruction to understand the diachronic semantic variation of semi-technical words and learn these words from a diachronic and dynamic perspective, and focus on the relations between semi-technical,technical and non-technical words and the changes in their meanings to combine the learning of semi-technical words with the development of the relevant disciplines.
