During the Tang and Five Dynasties,Dunhuang ballads gained popularity through widespread singing.Among these ballads,love ballads were served in folk activities,including praying rituals,wedding ceremonies and funeral rites.In the 20th century,the sinologist Arthur Waley was the first to translate Dunhuang ballads into English.However,despite his pioneering efforts,his translations of Dunhuang love ballads have largely been overlooked in the academic sphere.Therefore,there is sig-nificant value in examining Waley's translations of Rejoicing in the Autumn Sky,Meng Chiang-nü and The Ballad of Tung Yung,which recount classical Chinese folktales of love.By analyzing the poetic qualities and narrative techniques employed in these ballads,the consistency of his translation strategies can be found out.This analysis may serve as a valuable reference for translating and transmitting cultural ballads across language boundaries.
