This study focuses on the quality of analytic scoring for the e-mail writing task in the National Matriculation English Test(Beijing).Seventeen high school English teachers are invited to participate in the study, assigning scores to 200 real candidate responses after undergoing training. They employ both the analytic scoring method and the holistic method sequen-tially.Results from many-facet Rasch analysis and a survey reveal that analytic scoring surpasses holistic scoring in terms of discrimination index, rater internal consistency, and the utilization of scale steps, although the range of scorer severity is slightly larger than that in holistic scoring. Most teachers believe that analytic scoring provides a more comprehensive and ac-curate evaluation of candidates'English writing abilities and has a positive impact on teaching and learning, thereby demon-strating a preference for its application. The findings endorse the efficacy of the current analytic scoring and highlight implica-tions for teaching, scoring and rater training.
