Sarah Orne Jewett's The Country of the Pointed Firs is a famous pastoral piece. That initially appears to have noth-ing to do with imperialism. However, with a deeper analysis,we can see that Dunnet Landing in the novel cannot be an inde-pendent utopia since the contents in the houses in the town reflect imperialist expansion and influence.Besides, the Bowden Reunion described in the novel hints the conquest and white supremacist views of imperialism. In addition, although the pasto-ral reflect the life of a region,it is those regions that compose the whole empire,no matter how special a region may seem to be.
