Nano-sized titanium dioxide particles prepared at 110℃ by hydrothermal precipitation method were directly immobilized on the surface of wool fiber using tetrabutyl titanate.Scanning electrom microscopy (SEM),transmission electrom microscope(TEM),infrared spectroscopy(IR),and thermal gravimetry (TG) were employed to study and compare the surface morphology, microstructure, and thermal stability of the fibers before and after modification. And diffuse reflectance spectrum (DRS),tensile, directional frictional effect and self-cleaning property of the fibers were also measured. After modification with tetrabutyl titanate by hydrothermal method, the surface of the wool fiber was covered with anatase titanium dioxide pellets of average size 5nm or so,and chemical reaction had taken place between the fiber and titanium dioxide. The thermal stability of TiO2-coated fibers wasn't obviously changed, and the anti-ultraviolet irradiation capability and the self-cleaning ability was improved significantly. The tensile properties increased slightly.Friction coefficient increased, but frictional effectiveness decreased.
