The Impact of Participation in Food Traceability Systems on Farmers'Transition to Green Production
This paper utilizes micro-survey data from 1 248 apple farmers across six counties(cities)in Shan-dong and Shaanxi provinces in 2022.Employing a finite mixture model(FMM)to measure the degree of farmers'transition to green production, the study empirically examines the impact of participation in food traceability sys-tems on this transition. The results indicate that:(1)Participation in food traceability systems significantly pro-motes the transition to green production among farmers. This conclusion remains robust even after addressing po-tential endogeneity issues and conducting various robustness checks.(2)Heterogeneity analysis reveals that the promotion effect of participation in food traceability systems on green production transition is more pronounced a-mong large-scale farmers, those involved in organizations, and those with higher education levels.(3)Mechanism analysis suggests that participation in food traceability systems influences farmers'transition to green production through three pathways:product revenue incentives, enhancement of green awareness, and maintenance of social reputation. These findings provide empirical evidence for the government to promote the establishment of food traceability systems and offer feasible pathways for improving and advancing green production systems.
