Effects of rutin on feeding and growth of silkworm
[Objective]This study determined the effects of secondary metabolite rutin on feeding and growth of Lepidopteran silkworm to provide basis for developing new biological control agents and promo-ting practical application of silkworm model biological system in the field of Lepidopteran pest control.[Method]Leaf plate method was used to test feeding resistance and oviposition avoidance of mulberry leaves treated with different mass concentrations(5,10,and 20 mg/mL)of rutin.Distilled water was used as control.Mulberry leaves treated with different mass concentrations(5,10,and 20 mg/mL)of rutin were fed to the second and third aged silkworms in laboratory for certain periods of feeding time.Survival rate, body weight and development period of silkworms were measured to explore the effects of rutin on growth and development of silkworms.[Result]Flavonoid rutin had anti-feeding activity on both the second and third instars of silkworm larvae and the activity increased with the increase of mass concentration. With the prolongation of feeding time, the anti-feeding activity of rutin on silkworm larvae gradually decreased with the highest anti-feeding rate at the beginning of feeding. There was no significant difference between the second and third instars. With the increase of rutin concentration, the development period of the second and third instar larvae was gradually extended, indicating that rutin had inhibitory effects on growth period,es-pecially in the 20 mg/mL treatment group. The oviposition evasion rate of all rutin treatments was greater than 50%,indicating that rutin had good oviposition evasion effects on adult silkworm.[Conclusion]Fla-vonoid rutin had certain deterrent and repelling effects on growth and development of Lepidoptera Bombyx mori at high concentrations, with the potential to be developed as bio-pesticide.
