The Impact of Poverty Vulnerability on Rural Residents'Subjective Well-Being:Empirical Study Based on CFPS Data
The ultimate goal of realising common prosperity is to improve the people's sense of well-being,and the most arduous and burdensome task in this regard lies in the rural areas. At the present stage, there is still much room for improving the overall happiness of rural residents in China, and at the same time, rural residents face a high risk of falling into relative poverty in the future,so is this risk a constraint on the further enhancement of the sense of happi-ness?The study of this issue is necessary to explore the path to improving the happiness of rural residents in China.Based on the 2014 and 2018 panel data of Peking University's China Family Panel Studies(CFPS),the article empiri-cally analyses the relationship between the poverty vulnerability of China's rural residents and their subjective well-be-ing,and specifically explores the paths and mechanisms at play. The study found that(1)the poverty vulnerability of rural residents obtained by the income relative poverty criterion measure is still high, and there is a significant negative relationship between it and the subjective well-being of individuals,i.e.,the higher the degree of poverty vulnerability of an individual, the lower his or her level of subjective well-being.This conclusion still holds after a series of robust-ness tests.(2)Heterogeneity analysis reveals that the subjective well-being reduction effect of poverty vulnerability is more severe for residents in the Midwest and for male residents.(3)The analysis of the path of action reveals that the happiness-reducing effect of poverty vulnerability is mainly caused by risk vulnerability,i.e.,the lack of individual's ability to cope with risks. The analysis of the mechanism of action reveals that the improvement of rural residents'sub-jective social status, the increase of social trust, and the enhancement of confidence in the future can effectively allevi-ate the negative impact of vulnerability on individual subjective well-being.
