Fertility Quality Research in the Context of Oligonization:an Analytical Framework
Fertility is the beginning of the life course, and the quality of fertility is the starting point of high-quality population development.Based on the theory of 1,000 days of early life, this paper summarizes and condenses the con-ceptual connotation of fertility quality and innovatively proposes an analytical framework of fertility quality by drawing on relevant studies on fertility quality in different disciplines such as medicine and demography. The first few years of a child's life is a critical period of growth and development,in which the organism grows and develops rapidly, with strong plasticity;at the same time,it is more susceptible to the interference of the external environment, with strong vulnerability.Investing in this period of a child's life can lead to a higher quality of birth and create more favorable con-ditions for the child's future learning ability, health status and career development.Quality of birth is a comprehensive consideration of the outcome of a child's birth.Considering in depth the unevenness and phases that characterize indi-vidual growth and development,we classify the quality of fertility into two dimensions:physiological characteristics and functional characteristics,i.e.,a set of physiological characteristics at birth and the earliest functional characteris-tics that are manifested in the process of growth.Fertility quality extends throughout the mother's life from birth to deliv-ery,especially throughout the reproductive process of preparation, fertilization, pregnancy and delivery. This process is nested within a system of multiple environmental spheres, including parental characteristics, the family environ-ment,the natural environment, and the social environment, with the influence of the different environmental spheres on fertility quality diminishing outward from the core of parental characteristics. This analytical framework not only plays an important role in addressing the current low fertility problem and realizing high-quality population develop-ment,but also provides a new perspective for understanding changes in family, society and cultural traditions.
