Research on the Impact of Childcare Services on Female Labour Supply
Improving female labor supply is an important measure to stimulate the vitality of the labor market, and in-fant and child care services play a crucial role in it.Based on Becker's theory of family time allocation, combined with the empirical findings of previous studies, the quality of labor supply is incorporated into the analytical framework of fe-male labor supply to enrich the research dimension of female labor supply.Based on the 2019 field survey data, the util-ity and mechanism of the impact of infant and child care services on female labor participation, quantity of labor supply and quality of labor supply are mainly studied. The findings show that there is a causal relationship between infant and childcare services and female labor supply, and institutional childcare services can significantly increase the probabili-ty of female labor participation, increase the overall quantity of female labor supply, and at the same time enhance the quality of labor supply.Robustness tests show that childcare by nannies or sister-in-laws has a more significant effect on female labor supply than institutional child care services. It is also found that infant and childcare services have a more significant effect on the labor supply of women who have one child, are 20~30 years old,and are outside the sys-tem,which suggests that institutional childcare services have a great potential to promote female labor supply.Based on this, the construction of a universal, partially tilted,gender-balanced childcare service system and family childbirth support system can help alleviate the contradiction between the supply and demand of childcare services, improve the crowding out of young female labor supply by their childcare responsibilities, and establish a childbearing and child-care-friendly labor environment to promote the increase of female labor supply, which will ultimately enhance the effi-ciency and vitality of the overall labor market and inject new energy into the sustainable economic and social develop-ment of the society.Injecting new impetus into sustainable economic and social development.
