Intergenerational Care,Labour Participation of Adult Children and Productive Ageing
Under the current situation of low birthrate and aging population,intergenerational care by the elderly has become an important way to ease the burden of family care,increase the labor participation of adult children,and im-prove the productivity of the elderly.Based on the 2015 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study data,a bina-ry logistic regression model was constructed and verified that providing intergenerational care,controlling different co-variates,will significantly promote the labor participation of adult children;the propensity score matching method was used to examine the relationship between the two.The results show that intergenerational care can ensure the labor par-ticipation rate of adult children;this effect has gender differences and urban-rural differences,that is,the impact of intergenerational care on young women's labor participation is more significant,and is more prominent in urban areas.Combining empirical results with the"China Population and Employment Statistical Yearbook"and International Labor Organization data,it can be concluded that intergenerational care by the elderly increases female labor participation by at least 1.63 per cent(approximately 6.7571 million).This effectively ensures the labor force participation of women with care needs,and at the same time achieves structural substitution of intergenerational labor to a certain extent.On the one hand,the provision of intergenerational care for the elderly reduces the burden of family care,alleviates the di-lemma of motherhood,and increases the labor participation of adult children;on the other hand,it realizes the devel-opment of the human capital of the elderly and improves the productivity of the elderly.China has a tradition of inter-generational care,and it is still dominated by close intergenerational relationships.Therefore,under the overlapping background of China's labor shortage,structural contradictions,and adjustments to family planning policies,intergen-erational care can help achieve intergenerational mutual assistance,improve family welfare,further promote intergen-erational integration,and enhance labor productivity.
