The Impact of Family Distress and Bullying on Children's Psychological Well-being
Children from disadvantaged families often face dysfunctional family environments. These children are also more susceptible to bullying, and the interaction between family adversity and bullying can inflict dual harm on their mental health. This study, based on data from the 2018 national survey,"Research on the Health Status of Children from Disadvantaged Families",analyzes the relationship between family adversity and bullying and their impact on chil-dren's mental health. The research shows that both family adversity and bullying have significant negative effects on children's mental health, with a reinforcing effect between the two.On the one hand, family distress increases the risk of bullying for children, with the proportion of children from distressed families being bullied in the past 30 days being 9.6%higher than that of their peers from ordinary families. On the other hand, families in distress often lack of effec-tive family support, making it difficult to provide adequate support when children experience bullying. The psychologi-cal damage inflicted by bullying is more severe for children from disadvantaged families, with the impact on their emo-tional symptoms being about 1.5 times that of ordinary children.Additionally, bullying serves as a mediating variable for the impact of family adversity on children's mental health, explaining about 24.8%of the negative effect of family adversity on mental health. Therefore,to protect the mental health of children from disadvantaged families,interven-tion should come from both family and bullying perspectives. It is necessary to compensate for the lack of family func-tion as much as possible, while also strengthening the management and intervention of bullying both inside and outside school, thereby disrupting the pathway from family adversity to bullying.
