Since the British invasion of Xizang in China at the end of the 18th century,it has been trying to bring Xizang under its own control. The British Mission at Lhasa was one such unique existence, the members of which are collectively referred to as"Xizang offi-cials"in Western academic circles.Among them,Richardson was the first head of the British Mission at Lhasa and the last"Xizang offi-cial"to withdraw from there. When he entered Xizang for the first time,he undertook a major mission to obstruct the return of the Ninth Panchen to Xizang and to disrupt the relationship between the National Government and the Kashag Government(the local government of Xizang). When he entered Xizang again,he encouraged the Kashag Government to participate in the"Pan-Asian Conference"as an inde-pendent country, and instigate the Kashag Government to stir up"the event of the National Government Officials being forced to leave Xi-zang".After his departure from there,he continued to slander the reasons for China's liberation of Xizang and the changes that had taken place there before and after 1950.An analysis of him will help to clarify the nature of the fallacy of"Xizang independence"advocated by some Western anti-Chinese intellectual elites.
