In recent years, the number of independent coffeehouses has significantly risen. The changes in the space of coffeehouses often reflect the variations in social concepts and social relations. This paper takes the space of independent coffeehouses as the research object, studies from the perspective of space and uses field investigation and in-depth interview methods to explore the changes in social relations and social concepts reflected in independent coffeehouses as well as the mechanism by which the space of independent coffeehouses participates in the construction of those specific social relations and social concepts. The study founds that independent coffeehouses are gradually taking on the function of"third space"and people's imagination of coffeehouses is no longer linked to Western lifestyle, superiority and identity, but rather seek daily and simple life experience through independent coffeehouses.Urban planners need to fully recognize the importance of spatial layout and cultural attributes of shops in the process of urban construction and renewal and incorporate the daily cultural needs of community residents into the type arrangement and spatial layout of shops.
