Discourse Strategies on Constructing the National Images in China and the United States—Taking the English Translation of China's Report on the Work of the Government and the United States'the State of the Union Address in 2024 as an Example
Using the English translation of China's Report on the Work of the Government and the United States'the State of the Union Address in 2024 as corpora,this study employs a critical discourse analysis perspective and utilizes corpus tools to conduct a comparative a-nalysis of the discourse strategies employed in constructing national images.Through the analysis of keywords and the study of collocations in their index lines,it is found that the former mainly constructs an image of the government serving the people,while the latter depicts an image of the protector of people's rights and a humanitarian.The shared high frequency theme word"we"also conveys distinct meanings,in the former,it mainly establishes an outsider identity for the populace,whereas in the latter,it primarily expresses an insider identity for the citizens;besides,there are differences in the use of co-occurring modal verbs.These variations in language usage characteristics are determined by the social and historical context,briefly,the former's work focuses mainly on comprehensively promoting economic and so-cial development,while the latter's attention is primarily on the implementation of its domestic and foreign policies.
