On Ge Hong's Criticism of Confucianism,Taoism and Metaphysics
Ge Hong,a Taoist priest in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, not only advocated the combination of Confucianism and Taoism, but also held a critical attitude towards Confucianism and Taoism as well as metaphysical thought.Firstly,in response to the criticism of Confu-cianism's scholars on reclusive Taoist priest,Ge Hong believed that becoming an official or being reclusive had their own nature and could give play to their own advantages, and that the roles of the two could be said to be the same;secondly,in response to the criticism of Lao Zhuang's reverence for antiquity and the inaction thought,Ge Hong opposed the view of society that promotes antiquity and is indifferent to the present, and affirmed the significance of the continuous progress of society;thirdly,in response to the metaphysical atmosphere of the time and the social customs under its influence,Ge Hong argued that etiquette and enlightenment played an important role in maintaining social stability;and finally in response to the opposition to the chaotic and mediocre evil paths in the early folk Taoism,Ge Hong advocated the use of severe punishment and harsh laws to prohibit their development.
