A Study on the History of the Sugawara Family in the Heian Period of Japan
The Sugawara family in the Heian period of Japan originated from humble beginnings and gradually rose to prominence through the efforts of several generations, eventually reaching the peak of the family during the era of Sugawara no Michizane. However,in 901 AD,Sugawara no Michizane was demoted to Dazaifu and exiled to Kyushu following the"Shōtai Incident",and he died of hatred two years after exile. After his death,a series of catastrophic events occurred in the imperial court, and Sugawara no Michizane was deified as"Tenjin of Kitano Tenmangu",and became an object of worship for future generations.Despite Sugawara no Michizane being revered as a deity, the Sugawara family declined thereafter, with its members no longer playing significant roles in politics and gradually retreating to the cultural sphere. The rise and fall of the Sugawara family not only illustrated the power struggles of the Heian period, but also reflected the complexities and cruelty of Japanese aristocratic politics, revealing the political nature of"no humble origins among the upper ranks,no no-ble lineage among the lower ranks".
