A Comparative Study of Chinese and English Reduplicative Words for International Chinese Education
Reduplicative words are a linguistic form that exists in both the Chinese and English vocabulary systems. The research find-ings show that there are differences in the definitions of reduplicative words in Chinese and English as well as in their structures, semantics and functions, and reduplicative words in Chinese are mostly concentrated in verbs and adjectives, while in English, they are more com-monly found in rhetoric and vocabulary construction. This reflects significant differences in the expressive methods and cognitive habits be-tween the two languages. For this reason, teachers of Chinese as a foreign language should pay attention to the common errors made by students with an English language background when they acquire reduplicative words in the teaching process. It is recommended to improve teaching effectiveness by refining word categories, conducting situational teaching and optimizing teaching materials,so as to effectively support students'understanding and application in Chinese learning.
