A Qualitative Study on the Empowerment Effects of Chinese Rural Women from the Perspective of Short Video Platforms
As an empowerment medium, short video platforms have significantly increased the social visibility of rural women in China, shifting them from"invisible women"in the mainstream society to"visible women"in the virtual platform. This study selects 17 Chinese rural women broadcaster(users)for in-depth interviews, analyzes the factors impacting Chinese rural women's empowerment through Nvivo 11,and builds an analytical mode to assess the actual effect of the Kuaishou platform as an empowering vehicle for Chinese rural women. The study shows that the main factors impacting rural women's empowerment include internal empowerment(visible initiative and subjectivity)and external empowerment(visible sociality). In this context, from the analytic perspective of the"visibility-power"relationship,it is pointed out that the empowerment of rural women by short video platforms is superficial and partial. The new online communities they have built are oriented towards survival needs and unconsciously cater to others'expectations, reflecting existing gender roles and social structures. This situation exhibits a kind of passive initiative,a subjectivity of being scrutinized, and the illusion of being seen.
